FIVE FACTS ABOUT WOMENS WELLNESS

Womens Month is an important event that celebrates womens contributions to society. Beyond recognizing their achievements, this month is also a significant platform for addressing critical issues on women empowerment, including womens wellness.

A study by the global medical technology company Hologic revealed that the Philippines lags behind its Southeast Asian neighbors when it comes to women’s healthcare, placing second to the lowest in the region.

Supporting women’s health is the key to advancing their economic power. When women have access and options for their health, they are more physically and mentally ready to build and manage their own financial capability as well as contribute to their family’s finances.

This Women’s Month is the perfect opportunity to raise awareness on the state of women’s health in the country.

Here are five facts that every Filipina must know about their wellness:

The country suffers from “period poverty.”

Menstrual health advocates and public health experts highlighted the urgent issue of period poverty in the Philippines. More than the inadequate access to menstrual products and hygiene facilities, period poverty is also about the lack of discourse, information, and education on the importance of menstrual health.

The stigma surrounding menstruation makes it difficult for people, especially young girls, to participate in conversations about menstruating, preventing them from learning healthy hygiene habits.

Nearly five million Filipinas struggle with PCOS.

Around 4.5 million Filipinas have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition affecting the ovaries, resulting in irregular, unusual or very long periods. This hormonal imbalance commonly causes acne, weight gain, and excessive hair growth. It also increases one’s risk of long-term complications, such as diabetes and ovarian cancer.

While there is no known cure for PCOS, patients can manage their symptoms and potential complications through a combination of medication and lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise and stress management.

Severe period pain is not normal, despite what many believe.

Many women do not seek medical attention despite suffering from excessively painful periods, believing the pain is a normal part of menstruation. However, severe period pain is not normal and might be a symptom of a serious health condition, such as PCOS.

One common condition that causes secondary dysmenorrhea or extremely painful period cramps is endometriosis. According to the annual census of the Philippine General Hospital, endometriosis accounts for 15% to 20% of obstetrics and gynecology consults annually and 7.9% of surgeries for benign gynecologic diseases.

Uterine fibroids are another common condition among Filipinas. Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or on the wall of the uterus. A study published by the Philippine Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology revealed 77% of women have uterine fibroids. Between 30% and 40% of these women show symptoms such as bleeding between periods, pain during intercourse, and periods that last longer than normal.

Good mental health is harder to achieve for Filipino women.

A 2023 study found that Filipino women find it more difficult to achieve good mental health than men. This is because women face “unique pressures and worries” that contribute to their poor mental health. These include gender bias in the workplace and higher demands to perform domestic duties compared to men, especially childcare.

This finding on womens poor mental health highlights the need for women-specific comprehensive health services and plans, including counseling. To further transform mental health responsive communities, the government implemented strategies across different agencies and educational institutions.

Breast cancer is among the top leading causes of death among Filipino women.

Recent data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that breast cancer ranks eighth in the leading causes of death among Filipino women. In 2022, the WHO reported 33,079 breast cancer cases, among the highest in Asia. Among these cases, 30.06% were perimenopausal, 23.03% were menopausal, and 19.28% premenopausal.

Several studies have demonstrated poor survival outcomes for young Filipino breast cancer patients, from ages 40 years and below. These figures underscore the need for breast cancer awareness among Filipinos of all ages, as well as learning screening practices for early detection. Getting a cancer health protection plan is also a prudent course of action for those with a history of cancer in the family.

Honoring Innovation Leaders in the 4th Digital Financial Inclusion Awards

With technology reshaping the financial landscape and bridging gaps in accessibility, the 4th Digital Financial Inclusion Awards (DFIA) have recently been launched. The awards program aims to recognize the outstanding contributions of microfinance institutions (MFIs) and microentrepreneurs advancing financial empowerment through digital innovation. Powered by Citi Foundation in partnership with the Microfinance Council of the Philippines, Inc. (MCPI) and supported by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the DFIA serves as a platform to honor trailblazers of digital financial transformation.

The program launch was held at the BSP and was led by BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr., MCPI Chairperson Gilbert Maramba, and Citi Philippines CEO Paul Favila, together with 3rd DFIA Microentrepreneur Digital Champion Mr. Teodoro Lamang, Jr. The awarding ceremony for the 4th DFIA will take place later this year on November 21.

“With the measures we’ve put in place, digital finance is becoming more secure, efficient, and inclusive. The entrepreneurs we will honor prove that going digital isn’t something to fear – it’s something to embrace,” said BSP Governor Remolona.

The DFIA will recognize MFIs that effectively incorporate digital innovations to provide inclusive and efficient financial services to underserved communities. The program will commend institutions and individuals demonstrating excellence in harnessing digital tools to improve customer experience, streamline operations, and develop groundbreaking financial solutions for microentrepreneurs. Nominees will be evaluated based on their digital adoption, measurable impact, and contributions to financial inclusion. This year, four MFIs and fifteen microentrepreneurs will be celebrated as digital trailblazers for their outstanding achievements.

Awardees will receive cash prizes of PHP100,000 and laptops to further strengthen their digital transformation initiatives. In line with MCPI’s broader efforts to advance financial inclusion, the program will also provide knowledge-sharing opportunities to help more MFIs adopt digital solutions effectively.

Meanwhile, Favila also reinforced Citi Foundation’s dedication to fostering financial inclusion through digital advancement, stating that, “At Citi, we are committed to doing our part to help advance economic opportunity and address social challenges. The Digital Financial Inclusion Awards is the perfect opportunity for this as we champion and recognize the efforts of our Filipino microentrepreneurs in ensuring their businesses are ready for the future.”

Noting the growing influence of digitalization in microfinance, Maramba said, “This underscores how technology has not only optimized institutional efficiency but also empowered countless microentrepreneurs to achieve financial stability.”

Citi Foundation remains committed to driving economic progress and enhancing financial well-being for low-income communities worldwide. The foundation prioritizes financial inclusion, youth employment opportunities, and economic development. MCPI represents 64 microfinance institutions encompassing 90 percent of the sector in the Philippines. Through advocacy, capacity-building, and network development, MCPI continues to champion financial inclusion and microenterprise development.

Ready for the Elements: The OPPO A5 Pro 5G is Equipped to Handle the Extremes

Leading global smart device brand OPPO continues to set the benchmark for smartphone durability and reliability with OPPO’s latest and strongest device under the A Series, the OPPO A5 Pro 5G.

Engineered to withstand even the roughest conditions, the OPPO A5 Pro 5G ensures that Filipinos will have a sturdy device no matter the environment.

As the hustle and bustle of everyday life often involves exposure to intense heat and unpredictable conditions, the OPPO A5 Pro 5G is able to handle the occasion. Whether you're commuting under the scorching sun or working in outdoor environments, this smartphone is built to endure, offering seamless performance even in extreme conditions.

Make a splash and seize the day
The normal school day of a Filipino student often involves getting up early to prepare, commuting to and from school, hours of lectures and going out for school projects, among other things.

These scenarios expose their phones to unpredictable situations like an accidental plunge into the water basin while taking a bath, unpredictable downpours during commutes, or accidental spills from knocking over drinks during lunch time.

With an IP69, IP68 and IP66 water and dust resistance, the OPPO A5 Pro 5G will empower these young Filipinos to make a splash and live their lives to the fullest without having to worry that their devices will incur any water damage.

The IP68 rating of the OPPO A5 Pro offers a layer of protection when the phone is submerged in water of up to 85° celsius while its IP69 rating enables it to handle high-pressure and intense water sprays and dust intrusions.

Whether you’re facing the rigors of daily life or the unpredictable nature of the great outdoors, the OPPO A5 Pro 5G is designed to keep up with you. Built to endure and thrive, this device is the ultimate companion for those who demand both performance and reliability, no matter what challenges the day brings.

Take on the bumps and bruises without any hiccups
True to the #OPPOLangSakalam reputation, the  OPPO A5 Pro 5G, the strongest A Series device yet, is made for those constantly on the go.

For students and young professionals who are chasing their dreams and trying to make their mark on school and work who need to commute on a daily basis, their phones are also at risk for accidental drops and worse, being stepped on by other pedestrians or rolled over by vehicles.

But with the OPPO A5 Pro 5G’s Military-Grade Shock Resistance, these worries will be put at ease.

As proof of its top-notch durability, the OPPO A5 Pro 5G can endure falls from up to five meters without taking a hit in its overall structure. The motherboard upper cover and foam and silicone interior cushioning further reinforces its durability, protecting the delicate components inside from impact and damage.

This powerful feature is also ideal for messengers, delivery riders and service workers who are in fast-paced environments who need a strong device by their side.

Score the OPPO A5 Pro 5G (8GB+256GB) for Php 15,999 in eye-catching Bloom Pink or classy Mocha Brown or go for the OPPO A5 Pro (8GB+128GB) for only Php 10,999 in Mocha Brown and Olive Green.

Collective Action in Motion: Championing Sustainability through the First-Ever GCash Eco Run in Manila

GCash, the leading financial super app and largest cashless ecosystem in the Philippines, is mounting its first-ever Eco Run on March 23, 2025, along Ayala Avenue, Makati City.

The GCash Eco Run is a fully eco-conscious and sustainability-centered event that brings the GForest digital eco-movement to the streets, to further the positive environmental impact established by Silliman University in the Negros region. Stakeholders, advocacy groups, eco-products merchants, and running enthusiasts will be gathering to showcase sustainable practices in action.

Each successful registration to the GCash Eco Run will enable the planting of one grey mangrove tree in Negros Occidental, a province gravely affected by climate change. To underscore its commitment to climate action and helping local communities.

“GForest is a platform that transforms digital trees into actual plants. With GCash Eco Run, we are expanding the digital eco-movement established by GForest and giving our Green Heroes more opportunities to come together,” says CJ Alegre, head of sustainability for GCash. “It is testament to the powerful community we have created at GCash, that we can go beyond digital platforms and collectively take significant, real-world steps forward to help local communities and protect essential ecosystems in Negros Occidental.”

Scaling the eco-movement, one tree at a time

Growing in coastal areas in Negros Occidental, the grey mangrove (Avicennia marina) plays a vital role in environmental conservation, as it protects shorelines from erosion, mitigates the impacts of extreme weather, and sequesters carbon, all while providing habitats for marine life. Mangrove forests are crucial assets in the fight against climate change and preserving marine biodiversity.

In the Negros Island Region, GCash has a long-running collaboration with Dumaguete-based higher education institution Silliman University (SU), and its Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS), which focuses on mangrove restoration, protecting coastal environments, and providing livelihood opportunities to local farmers and fisherfolk.

The planting of the grey mangrove trees, made possible by GCash Eco Run participants and sponsors, will take place on the site managed by SU and maintained by local communities. This is part of the SU-GCash Reforestation in South Negros Project, whose overall goal to plant a total of 1M across critical areas in the region by 2029.

Sustainability-focused organizations partnering for the environment

GCash makes it easy for companies to create a meaningful environmental impact. By connecting businesses with GForest’s trusted planting partners, GCash enables them to support science-based, proven-effective sustainability programs seamlessly.

IKEA Philippines—the local arm of the global furniture brand headquartered in Sweden, and whose Pasay store holds the record as the largest IKEA store in the world—is supporting the event by pledging 30,000 trees under the South Negros conservation initiative. Sustainability has always been part of IKEA’s commitment to its customers, as it offers home furnishing products, food, services, and solutions that inspire and enable people to lead healthier and more eco-conscious everyday lives.

“IKEA’s sustainability direction goes hand in hand with this activity, [focusing] on three pillars: Healthy and sustainable living, being circular and climate-positive, and being fair and caring. Today, sustainability is neither a choice nor an option. It’s a must, which is why IKEA is deeply focused on this priority,” shares Ricardo Pinheiro, country retail manager of IKEA Philippines.

This partnership with SU-GCash Reforestation underscores IKEA Philippines' central goal to create a positive social impact within communities, as it hopes to inspire other businesses to join the collective effort to make more sustainable choices every day.

“Our partnership with GCash and IKEA is a testament to the power of collective action for sustainability. Through this collaboration, we aim to restore vital ecosystems and engage local communities in long-term conservation efforts,” said Dr. Hilconida P. Calumpong, project coordinator and professor emeritus, Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS), Silliman University.

A fully eco-conscious, sustainability-centered event

The GCash Eco Run has been deliberately designed to promote sustainable practices in every aspect. From adapting sustainable and mindful eco-friendly practices in the event production, to booth structures being built out of recycled and non-single-use plastic materials, all the way to race kits being made out of recycled PET bottles—GCash Eco Run ensures a 100% sustainable, eco-conscious experience for all.

GCash will also introduce its new 100% recycled plastic GCash VISA cards at the sidelines of the Eco Run at a special retail price, kickstarting the initiative with the Filipino running community.

Merchants offering eco-products or eco-friendly advocacies like Bukid ni Bogs, Human Nature, The Eco Shift Store, Wonderhome Naturals, Cut the Craft Clothing and Apparel will also have booths at the event.

The GCash Eco Run will also amplify the efforts of eight advocacy partners. Berdeng Kalabaw, Aling Tindera, and ZOLO are encouraging runners to bring recyclable waste, to be collected for proper waste management. Caritas Manila will be accepting donations of old clothes, WWF Philippines will call for donations for habitat conservation and animal welfare, and Hound Haven will encourage the adoption of retired working dogs to rally behind charity programs.

To promote farm-to-table practices, Commune Café + Bar will showcase locally sourced coffee, from Atok, Benguet, while the Philippine Coffee Board, Inc. will be offering Itogon coffee; Seven Days of Greens will retail organic fruits and vegetables from smallholder farmers.

The GCash Eco Run is supported by IKEA Philippines, Globe Fiber, Pay & Go, eTap Solutions, BPI-MS, GOMO, Standard Insurance, BYD, Century Tuna, ECPay, Gringo, Park Access, Singlife, and ST Telemedia. These sponsors have also pledged to plant trees and support Silliman University’s mangrove conservation efforts. The event is organized by RUNRIO, a leading organizer of race events in the Philippines.

“At GCash, community drives our broader sustainability agenda of harnessing tech and innovation for good,” shares Alegre. “The support of our sponsors is testament to how partnerships built on shared goals can transform commitments into action, and GCash aims to engage more like-minded organizations to scale and grow this eco-movement.”
