EdgePoint Makes Significant Progress in Closing the Digital Infrastructure Gap, Expanding Connectivity Across the Philippines

MANILA, 14 April 2025: EdgePoint Infrastructure (“EdgePoint”), a leading ASEAN-based independent telecommunications infrastructure company, through its subsidiary, EdgePoint Towers Inc. (“EdgePoint Philippines”), announced that it is on track with  its mission to help bridge the digital connectivity gap across the Philippines with the latest three milestones achieved in the first quarter of 2025; the successful completion of more than  300 co-locations and 100 built-to-suit (BTS) sites, as well as the deployment of their first two BTS sites in the Visayas region in Central Philippines.

Since entering the Philippines in 2022, EdgePoint has grown its portfolio through a combination of tower acquisition and organic growth. In alignment with the Philippines' Common Tower Policy, EdgePoint aims to promote infrastructure sharing and reduce operational costs for telecommunications providers. This policy, which encourages the development of shared towers to improve network coverage and enhance connectivity across the country, supports the growing demand for mobile data and 5G services.

William Walters, Chief Executive Officer of EdgePoint Philippines said “We are committed to bridging the tower-to-population gap in the Philippines, where the current ratio stands at approximately one tower for every 3,500 people. While we are focused on ensuring more towers are built towards improving the ratio, co-location is a key strategy in enabling better connectivity and coverage across the country, as it allows multiple Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to share the same infrastructure, reducing costs and accelerating the rollout of services. As we continue to expand our tower portfolio, we remain committed to working with our customers to ensure we are efficiently speeding up network expansion and enabling seamless connectivity across the country."

Speaking on EdgePoint’s expansion he adds “We initially acquired sites in Luzon, with a few in Visayas and these new BTS projects in the region represent an expansion of our organic footprint beyond Luzon. Building in Visayas presents challenges due to its varied geography, remote islands, and rugged terrain, which can make construction and logistics more complex and costly, so we are pleased to be expanding in this region with successful delivery of our initial BTS sites”.

Announced in 2020, the Common Tower Policy in the Philippines aims to reduce infrastructure costs by promoting the sharing of telecom towers among multiple MNOs. Since its introduction, the policy has led to increased investments and a rise in shared towers, improving network coverage and accelerating service rollouts across the country. By fostering collaboration and addressing the tower-to-population gap, the policy is helping meet the growing demand for high-speed mobile and broadband services in underserved areas.

To date, EdgePoint Philippines is the fourth largest independent telecommunications infrastructure company in Philippines with 3000 sites in its portfolio

This year’s art exhibit was combined with The Manila Hotel’s 2025 Easter Party theme, Easter at the EGGmerald City. Accelerating Inclusion: How GCash is Leveling the Playing Field for Women through Responsive Digital Financial Tools

GCash—the Philippines’ leading finance super app and largest cashless ecosystem—reiterates its commitment to accelerate action, accelerate inclusion to advance women’s economic empowerment through tech and innovation.

Under the mission of “Finance For All,” GCash continues to seek ways to break barriers to inclusion, going beyond digital financial solutions to create a responsive digital economy where women can thrive.

GCash heeded the call of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, the global day celebrating women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements, as it further dedicated itself to strategies that advanced gender equality. In keeping with this year’s IWD theme, “Accelerate Action,” GCash upheld women’s month with its own thrust, “Accelerate Action, Accelerate Inclusion,” which focused on empowering women with tools to make better-informed financial decisions, invest in themselves and their future, and take control of their finances to achieve independence.

“At GCash, we don’t just celebrate women—we invest in their success. Women are leaders, innovators, and changemakers, and their resilience drives not just our company but entire communities forward. Through our initiatives, we are creating an ecosystem where women have the tools to thrive in and beyond their careers. When women rise, we all rise,” Martha Sazon, President & CEO of Mynt, the holding company of GCash shared.

The inclusion of women as key to nation-building
GCash remains aligned with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the institution behind the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion (NSFI) that sees financial inclusion as a pathway to sustainable and equitable national development.

In creating the NSFI 2022-2028 strategy in 2019, the BSP identified tactics for coordinating a whole-of-nation approach to inclusive growth and financial resilience for every Filipino. The BSP and GCash consequently saw the status of women emerge as a crucial indicator in areas relevant to the nation’s progress and well-being.

“This informed our belief that empowering women leads to uplifting communities, and this is why GCash has always set out to confront the barriers and biases existing on both individual and systemic levels,” shared Sazon.

Empowerment through effective access
The lack of access to financial institutions has been reported as a fundamental systemic barrier, where account ownership is a core indicator of financial inclusion. According to the 2021 BSP’s Financial Inclusion Survey, seven in 10 adult Filipinos were categorized as financially excluded. The survey also identified the Philippines’ underserved sectors: the agriculture sector; the labor sector; women-owned and women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs); and the youth.

GCash has helped confront this barrier by accommodating the lack of identification documents, credit history, and other documentation often required by traditional financial institutions granting access to basic financial services. Using tech as both a democratization and a tool for good, the fintech leader has opted to use alternative data based on a user’s digital footprint, thus modernizing and improving the accessibility of financial solutions.
GCash ensures that its products—from saving and payment transfers to investing and getting insured—are flexible and responsive, capable of meeting specific needs and tailoring services wherever necessary. This has paved the way not only for widespread but also effective access. Five out of 10 registered GCash users are women who now have access to an e-wallet and a broader financial ecosystem; five out of 10 GSave users are women, with the majority residing outside Metro Manila.

In addition, women now have greater access to holistic protection. Seven out of 10 GInsure users are women, now safeguarded by diverse insurance products like coverage policies for life, health, business, car, and more. By offering one of the lowest premiums in the Philippine market, GCash has also transformed the insurance landscape with GInsure, making insurance affordable and attainable.

A focus on women’s economic empowerment
To drive equality and inclusion even further, GCash aims to innovate further and expand its digital financial ecosystem. This agenda focuses on women-led MSMEs and the leveraging of private-public partnerships to guarantee an intersectional approach.

Offering support to address the unique challenges faced by women, GCash has already disbursed more than PhP 186 billion worth of loans to over 6.9 million Filipinos, including those from grassroots sectors (such as sari-sari store owners, public market vendors, and farmers).

Providing fair and inclusive loans, once inaccessible to the vast majority, is only one way GCash levels the playing field. The company has gone on to successfully facilitate women’s access to capital and assets, with six out of 10 GLoan users being women.  This is determined through the in-house credit scoring model of GCash, GScore, which uses transactional behavior as a proxy for measuring a user’s creditworthiness and has ultimately changed the landscape of microlending.

GCash further ensures that initiatives to promote women’s economic empowerment are active throughout the year. Using a multi-sectoral approach to projects, GCash widens its reach and strengthens its impact by collaborating with local government units, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, and more.
“Having long pursued meaningful partnerships to bring tech for good to more unbanked and underserved sectors, our experience at GCash has taught us that collaboration is the key to advancing gender equality,” said Sazon. “However, if we maintain our current pace, per the World Economic Forum, we stand to achieve full gender equality only in the year 2158. We at GCash feel the urgency now more than ever—and we know the only way we can move the needle and advance equality is if more of us work together.”

GCash intends to build on its progress to advance gender-inclusive finance and guarantee its sustainability beyond 2025. Staying true to its pursuit of “Finance For All,” GCash’s pact for the future remains grounded in accelerating the inclusion of women in marginalized, vulnerable sectors—thus ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey toward financial empowerment.

Rex Education Celebrates 75 Years of Commitment to Education at AECON 2025

Rex Education marked its 75th anniversary at AECON 2025, held on January 16-17 at the Gallio Events Hall in Parañaque. The theme, celebrating 75 Years of Commitment to Quality Education: Seamless and Meaningful Learning Experiences Through Assessment, Intervention, and Enrichment, highlighted the company’s dedication to education. Nearly 1,000 educators, school leaders, and stakeholders attended the two-day event, which focused on addressing key educational challenges through insightful discussions and knowledge-sharing.

Gathering of Change Makers in Education
Each year, AECON addresses pressing issues in education, equipping teachers and leaders with valuable insights and solutions. This year, as part of its 75th anniversary, the focus is on creating seamless and meaningful learning experiences for every learner and educator.
In his opening remarks, REX COO Roger John Y. Fontelera highlighted that education is not a one-size-fits-all approach. He stated, "This year’s AECON isn’t about giving ready-made solutions. Instead, it’s about creating a space for reflection, learning, and collaboration. We want to provide you with stepping stones—resources, strategies, and ideas—that you can adapt to meet the specific needs of your schools, communities, and learners."
Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Peter Irving Corvera delivered a keynote address emphasizing the urgency of preparing Filipino learners for an increasingly digital world. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to developing future-ready learners by integrating technology, enhancing critical thinking, and strengthening public-private collaborations.
One key session featured a panel discussion with respected education experts and policymakers:
  • Dr. Karol Mark Yee, Executive Director o of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2)
  • Dr. Dina Joana Ocampo, Professor at the University of the Philippines and former DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching
  • Ms. Rhodora Ferrer, Executive Director of the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC)
  • Atty. Joseph Noel Estrada, Legal Counsel of the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA)
Moderated by Dr. Edizon Fermin, Vice President for Academic Affairs at National Teachers College, the discussion focused on improving learning outcomes in the Philippines. It emphasized evidence-based policy decisions, stronger accountability among education leaders, and the importance of authentic assessments to accurately measure student progress.
In the afternoon, Dr. Amy Berry, Director of EngagED Consulting, led a plenary session on student engagement. She challenged traditional approaches and introduced innovative methods that empower both teachers and students to co-create meaningful learning experiences.
A Moment of Gratitude and the Symphony of Learning
The second day of AECON began with a Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Most Reverend Jesse Mercado, Bishop of Parañaque, reflecting on the journey of Rex Education and its mission to support Filipino education.
After the mass, REX CEO Don Timothy Buhain introduced the Symphony of Learning Solutions, a suite of educational resources supporting lifelong learning, from early childhood to professional development. This initiative highlights REX’s commitment to integrating assessment, intervention, and enrichment for educators and learners.
Buhain compared learning to a symphony, where every effort, resource, and voice comes together to create something meaningful. He assured, "The symphony will improve—with practice, continuous learning, change, and execution. In the future, there will be additions when they are necessary. We will listen and count on our Edukampyon community, including the voice of our learners."
The Symphony of Learning Solutions includes lesson exemplars, learning instruments, digital platforms like Schoology, and targeted assessments to ensure well-rounded education at every stage.

75 Years and Beyond: The Edukampyon Commitment
Reaching 75 years is a testament to Rex Education’s dedication to every learner and educator it has served. The journey continues.
In his message of gratitude, REX Chairman and President Atty. Dominador Buhain thanked all the Edukampyons and shared, "Seventy-five years, and our work is not yet done. The future demands more from us, and we accept that challenge with open hearts and minds... We vow to continue listening, learning, and innovating to provide high-quality learning solutions for every Filipino learner."
As Rex Education looks beyond 75 years, its commitment remains—to be the trusted katuwang of every Filipino educator, school, and learner, fostering lifelong learning for generations—para sa bata, para sa mamamayan, para sa bayan, for life.
