GLOBAL STYLE UNWRAPPED AT SM CITY GRAND CENTRAL
Mentos Philippines Upcycles Plastic Waste into Bus Terminal Benches to Provide Commuters a Refreshing Pit Stop
Through its partnership with PCX Markets (PCX), Perfetti Van Melle Philippines has transformed over 1,000 kilograms of plastic waste into 100 Mentos benches, distributed to bus terminals nationwide.
As part of its Mentos “Yes to Fresh” campaign, Perfetti van Melle is exploring new ways to refresh Filipino commuters, especially during the recent All Saints’ Day long weekend (Undas) when millions of Filipinos travelled to their provinces to visit friends and family, and in preparation for the upcoming Holiday season. Mentos looks forward to provide some much-needed freshness to commuters in major bus terminals in Batangas, Naga, Bacolod, and Cagayan de Oro. Besides sharing its beloved Mentos candies and other goodies, the brand donated 100 Mentos-blue benches made from 100% recycled plastic, giving commuters a chance to rest, refresh, and say ‘Yes to Fresh’ while waiting for their buses.
The Mentos benches, which will remain as permanent fixtures at the bus terminals, also offer a fresh lease of life to plastic waste that might otherwise have ended up in nature or landfills.
“As so many Filipinos enjoy our products every day, we have a unique opportunity to help drive positive change. By integrating sustainability into our brand plans, brands like Mentos can bring joy to consumers while also supporting the development of a circular economy for plastic in the Philippines. These “refreshing” Mentos benches, made entirely from recycled plastic waste, are a great example of how this can be done,” said David Roos, Perfetti Van Melle Philippines’ Managing Director.
Perfetti Van Melle has a strong commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint globally. The company continues to reduce plastic in its packaging and is dedicated to finding meaningful alternatives to plastic packaging materials. In the Philippines, Perfetti Van Melle partners with PCX Markets to support projects that divert plastic waste from nature. Besides the innovative Upcycled Benches project, the company supports recycling initiatives and social impact projects like the Aling Tindera waste-to-cash program, which empowers women micro-entrepreneurs to become sustainability champions in their communities, as well as company-wide beach clean-ups.
“This initiative is a fantastic example of how businesses can help fund the cleanup of plastic waste, bringing much-needed financing to our country’s emerging waste management sector, while also creating a circular economy by driving demand for the final product,” said Rudi Ramin, Commercial Director, PCX Markets. PCX Markets, a global marketplace for audited and traceable plastic waste recovery and responsible processing. It encourages the elimination of unnecessary plastic and enables the responsible recovery and processing of any remaining plastic, ensuring it doesn’t end up in nature.

PLDT, Smart Empower Persons with Disabilities in QC through Digital Business Basics Training
A group of persons with disabilities in Quezon City are now skilled and more knowledgeable on new technologies to level up their existing businesses, while the aspiring entrepreneurs among them now know more about developing new businesses.
PLDT and Smart, together with Adaptive Technology for Rehabilitation, Integration, and Empowerment of the Visually Impaired (ATRIEV), NORFIL Foundation, and the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) of Quezon City successfully trained 21 participants from the city, to enhance their digital skills and introduce them to business opportunities.
“A big part of PLDT’s mission is to ensure equitable access to technology and connectivity, enabling all Filipinos to leverage digital innovations to improve their lives. We hope that the initiative helped build their skills, boost their productivity, and foster their participation in the digital economy,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, head of Stakeholder Management at PLDT and Smart.
The eight-day Digital Business Basics Training (DBBT) provided participants with the knowledge, skills, and attitude they need to manage their finances effectively, and start and run a successful business. The participants learned basic social media marketing, and other critical information when starting a business such as fund sourcing, pricing, and costing. Additionally, the participants learned the basics of branding and identifying their target market with the use of various applications.
The DBBT module also included a presentation of Maya Business, helping participants explore digital business payment solutions.
Quezon City PDAO Head Deborah Dacanay shared, “the Quezon City government fully supports Inclusion programs not only for persons with disabilities but for all QCitizens as well. We think that the DBBT will be very helpful for persons with disabilities, from preparing to start their business and, eventually, managing a sustainable enterprise. Linked by our shared passion to help improve the lives of persons with disabilities and their families, we are grateful to have supportive partners in PLDT and Smart.”
“Even as we get older, it is still important to learn new technologies, for our own growth and as big help to improve our small business,” said 57-year old Rico Lanuza, one of the participants.
Another participant, 39-year old Joel Angelo Gavino, is an entrepreneur who used to be an OFW, who experienced a lot of hardships with his disability. After the training, Joel said, “I’m very happy to be part of this eight-day training. I learned various digital tools that I used to think were hard to learn. With everyone now engaging through social media platforms, I am happy to have learned how to create my own Facebook page, and just using my cellphone. Now I know I will be able to attract more customers to my store.”
This engagement with ATRIEV is part of PLDT and Smart’s much broader Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advocacy through Technology (IDEATe) program, which seeks to enable the successful participation of marginalized sectors in the digital economy. IDEATe also contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which include Goal No. 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and UNSDG No. 10 Reduced Inequalities by empowering and promoting the social, economic and political inclusion of all, including persons with disabilities.
