LG: Artificial Intelligence will run more Homes in 2018
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has long been a hotly debated topic, with some pundits claiming that it poses a grave threat to humanity while others believe that AI systems can help humans improve productivity and conditions around them. For technology company LG Electronics (LG), AI is being harnessed to achieve the latter.
The recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas saw a smorgasbord of personal computing wearables, smartphones and home appliances. And LG, through its Open Partnership, Open Platform and Open Connectivity strategy, is an emerging leader in this exciting field. The brand also showcased a diverse lineup of smart products that shows the world that LG is working to move technology forward while improving daily life for consumers worldwide in 2018 and beyond.
LG’s extensive portfolio of smart appliances comes with Google assistant capabilities. As of this writing, there are nearly 90 LG smart appliances that seek to deliver a simple yet future-ready connected smart home experience.
Some of the price competitive Wi-Fi connected home appliances in LG’s roster include: washing machines and dryers, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, vacuums and air purifiers, among others. With these appliances in the home, domestic life becomes an interactive and intuitive experience.
The beauty of the smart home lies in the hands-free operation of these appliances with the help of Google Assistant. Homeowners can now use simple voice commands on their phones to check the time remaining during wash cycles, for example, or turn off their range after cooking. Running a household with this technology is made simpler and more convenient for the on-the-go lifestyles of today. Setup is user-friendly and convenient with the free LG SmartThinQ app, which allows users to control the entire lineup of LG smart appliances.
While not all smart appliances will be available yet in the Philippines, there are those that already made its way to a number of Filipino homes, such as the LG InstaView Door-in-DoorTM (DID). This smart refrigerator model allows users easy access to favorite food items by simply knocking on the mirrored glass panel twice. This innovation reduces cold air loss by up to 41%, making food stored in the refrigerator stay fresh longer. LG InstaView DID is also equipped with LG SmartThinQ. This allows users to set the refrigerator temperature, control HygieneFRESH+ and diagnose the refrigerator with a simple tap on the user’s smartphone.
But with further AI developments in the horizon, LG’s smart home appliances will be better equipped to predict the user’s needs. Its adaptive technology interprets usage habits and data to the point that LG smart appliances will know when to alert owners to order filter refills for the refrigerator or air purifier, as well as troubleshoot lint build-up in the dryer.
With these innovations, the future of artificial intelligence and smart homes indeed looks bright.

Hall of Fame Class of 2017
Happening to a near side-by-side
with the Award’s Night is the SBR EXPO, a retailers event showcasing items all
geared to the needs of a tri-athlete.
New retailers will join in the event showing their wares that are health
related in nature that both athletes and non-sport minded individuals may be
interested in. This is an open to all event, regulars of the mall can also
enjoy the items offered on those days.
The first of all the races will
take place in April which is the AQUAMAN (Aquathlon), followed by the DUAMAN
(Duathlon) in May and capping it all off with the TRIMAN (Triathlon) in June;
registration for all SBR events is now open to all interested individual and
enjoy an early bird discount.
Part of SBR’s plan for this year
is to launch a race event for kids and PWD’s – a group that shows promise in
terms of growth, recognition and possible fair market locally and abroad. Mr. De Guzman believes that the sport should
be made open to all ages, sex and physical condition and still maintains the
element of simple enjoyment without the normal pressure of a very dynamic and
demanding sport. He aims to bring the
sport nationwide and have it set on the natural terrain of the province that he
goes to.
WHO IS SBR.PH?
What started as a simply desire by
a tri-athlete is now a growing e-commerce and triathlon event group serving the
growing local fans and enthusiasts of the sports, thus SWIMBIKERUN.ph is born
in 2011.
SWIMBIKERUN.ph (SBR.ph) is the
brainchild of a Carlos de Guzman, a tri-athlete with a passion for the
sports. With the fire burning strong, a
community is now formed that is continuously growing and inspiring lives. SBR.ph is an online store that caters to the
gear needs of tri-athletes and/or those that are simply into running, swimming
and cycling. He has shirts, socks, caps,
drinking bottles, monitor watches, goggles, support straps and such made
available on his site. He can also give
support to some cyclist needs such as wheels.
Carlos de Guzman conceptualized a whole tri-series event
designed for beginners and come-backers.
This locally produced event is set to have the participants beat their
own time in their own pace, letting them enjoy the whole experience of being
part of this sport. The logic behind
this is to help the participant develop their own confidence and needed
strength without the pressure of an outside time meter. They build their strength and stamina and
when they are ready, then they can fully try-out the other triathlon events in
the country. That is why he developed
the whole sports event in a segmented pattern – the Aquaman (Aquathlon), the
Duaman (Duathlon) and the Triman (Triathlon).
These allowed interested individuals to try out a segment first, build
his confidence and strength, move to the next, and rebuild his strength again,
till he is ready for the whole thing. It
also became a retraining ground for those who were out of the circuit for a
time, making it a place for beginners and elites to meet and know one another
and have their stories shared – flowing freely within the growing community.
After cultivating the soil for
interaction, what better way to make it prosper by having a recognition
activity and an expo thus the Award’s Night and SBR Expo was born. This became a much attended event by the
growing community of SBR.ph. Enthusiast
of the sports gets to be truly interactive by nominating their favorites and
voting for those who qualified the nomination stage. Winner gets to get the accolade that they
deserve from the community that they are part of. With the expo, runners, cyclist and swimmers
get to see, choose and purchase sport’s items in one location. It also became a meet and greeting ground for
tri-athletes, community member or enthusiast they may be. Expo retailers get to show their latest ware
and enjoy a day or two of greeting, friendly haggling and seeing familiar and
new faces in the sports.
From e-commerce to events maker to
recognition and a growing home grown community, SBR.ph is truly making it
strong and will push the envelope, opening new venues this 2018.

Geje Eustaquio Earns ONE Interim Flyweight World Championship with Unanimous Decision Over Kairat Akhmetov
The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), sent the Mall of Asia Arena crowd into a frenzy last Friday night in Manila, with another thrilling evening of authentic martial arts action. The absolute best in local and international martial arts talent took to the ONE Championship cage at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES to showcase their incredible skills. In the main event, Geje Eustaquio walked out of the arena to a roar of adulation and with the ONE Interim Flyweight World Championship around his waist, defeating former world champion Kairat Akhmetov.
In the main event of ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES, Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio of Baguio City, Philippines clinched the ONE Interim Flyweight World Championship, edging Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov by unanimous decision in an exhilarating five-round title tilt. Although Akhmetov managed to showcase his wrestling, it was largely ineffective against Eustaquio, who was far superior in the striking department for the majority of the bout. Eustaquio repeatedly connected on Akhmetov with crisp, clean combinations throughout the championship contest. In the end, all three judges saw the bout in favor of Eustaquio to win by unanimous decision.
Geje Eustaquio, ONE Interim Flyweight World Champion, stated: “I don’t know what to say. This belt is not mine to take, it’s ours. Thank you to my family who was always there from the start, coach Mark Sangiao, and the entire Team Lakay who never doubted me and always believed that one day I would stand here holding this belt. I am proud to represent this flag all throughout the world. Here is your world champion from the Philippines. Adriano [Moraes] I know you’re there. I got a belt! Give me one more try and I hope to give you a better challenge this time.”
In the co-main event of the evening, 22-year-old Joshua “The Passion” Pacio unveiled an improved grappling game, submitting China’s Lan Ming Qiang via rear naked choke in the very first round. Pacio started off with his world-class wushu, operating from range with fast and powerful kicks. After taking the action to the mat, Pacio effortlessly took mount and pounded on his foe who soon gave up the back. With the body triangle locked in, Pacio sunk his forearm underneath Lan’s neck and secured the bout-ending maneuver.
Rafael “Indio” Nunes of Brazil made a triumphant return to the ONE Championship cage after two years away from competition to defeat Filipino featherweight veteran Eric “The Natural” Kelly by second-round submission. The 30-year-old Muay Thai specialist kept Kelly on the defensive with his striking before taking matters to the ground and sinking in a deep d’arce choke to score the finish.
In the first ever traditional Muay Thai bout inside the ONE Championship cage, multi-division Lumpinee World Champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao emerged triumphant against WBC Muay Thai Super Bantamweight World Champion Joseph “The Hurricane” Lasiri. Gaiyanghadao showcased his trademark power to dominate from start to finish, winning by technical knockout.
A grueling flyweight showdown between “The Southern Eagle” Ma Hao Bin of China and Sotir Kichukov of Bulgaria transpired inside the ONE Championship cage. Neither of the two would give each other any quarter for three whole rounds, as they traded their best offense all throughout. Although Kichukov would have his moments on the feet, most of the action took place on the ground where Ma enjoyed a tremendous advantage. In the end, Ma turned in another well-rounded performance to claim victory via unanimous decision.
Japanese grappling prodigy Hayato Suzuki placed himself back on the winning track, pulling off a first-round submission victory over former world title contender Yago Bryan of Brazil. With 57 seconds remaining in the opening period of the strawweight contest, Suzuki latched onto a wrenching rear naked choke to force the tap, notching his eighth submission win as a professional.
Emilio “The Honey Badger” Urrutia of the United States continued his impressive run in ONE Championship, knocking out Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Bruno Pucci in the first round. Urrutia stifled Pucci with crisp boxing combinations, making it difficult for the Brazilian to bring the action to the mat. Urrutia secured the statement-making finish by connecting on a sensational left hook past the midway point, sending Pucci crashing to the canvas.
Filipino featherweight standout Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly delivered a sensational first-round knockout of opponent Meas Meul, dropping the Cambodian with a high kick merely seconds into the bout. At the opening bell, Kelly engaged Meul at the center of the cage and connected on a quick three-punch combination before delivering the final blow that sent Meul face first into the canvas.
Jomary Torres of Manila, Philippines scored the most impressive win of her young career, authoring a swift knockout finish over Team Lakay atomweight ace April Osenio. Torres left a lasting impression in her third trip to the ONE Championship cage, driving Osenio to the mat with a high-impact slam before putting the final touches with follow-up ground strikes to claim the knockout.
Rajinder Singh Meena of India captured his first victory inside the ONE Championship cage, defeating highly-touted Chinese lightweight prospect Zhang Ze Hao by way of first-round submission. Determined to break into the winner’s column, Meena needed just 42 seconds in the opening round to put Zhang to sleep with a guillotine choke.
Kicking off ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES was a riveting strawweight encounter as Indonesian dynamo Adrian Matheis squared off against the debuting Eddey Kalai of Malaysia. Matheis weathered a gutsy opening sequence from Eddey, who effortlessly pummeled the ONE Strawweight Indonesia Tournament Champion with his superb boxing. The complexion of the contest took a drastic turn when Matheis gained leverage on the mat, catching Kalai with a rear naked choke to force the tap.

DTI leads Halal Export Promotion and Dev’t
THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as the lead agency in developing and promoting the Philippine halal industry, is set to implement initiatives toward the development of the country’s Halal exports highlighting its potential contribution in driving trade and investments in the country.
Speaking at the recent World Halal Assembly held in Manila last 18 and 19 January, DTI Trade and Investments Promotion Group Assistant Secretary Abdulgani M. Macatoman cited figures validating the need for the Philippines to get involved in halal export, import and production.
“Muslim population worldwide has been steadily growing at a 1.84 percent per annum. In 2016 Muslim population was at 2.14 billion, growing to 2.18 billion in 2017. At present, 32.43 percent of Asia’s current population of 1.4 billion is Muslim. In Africa, there are 635 million Muslims. World Muslim population translates to a $3.2- trillion halal industry worldwide. It is expected to increase to $10 trillion by 2030,” explained Assistant Secretary Macatoman.
He added, “the sheer size of underserved markets makes it easier to penetrate the industry. There are simply more people who need Halal products and services than there are existing businesses.”
At present, the Philippines only contributes five (5) percent of the global halal trade. With the new Philippine halal law in place, Assistant Secretary Macatoman explained that Filipino entrepreneurs are in the best position to take advantage of the rising halal industry worldwide. According to him, Filipino Muslims naturally understand what the global market wants and needs, being part of the market themselves.
“Filipino entrepreneurs like the ones based in Zamboanga are in a unique position to take advantage of this trend, particularly the efforts of the Zamboanga Ecozone and Freeport and Regional Economic Zone Authority of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. Preparation of halal food and fashion pieces requires a great understanding and obedience to Muslim culture, and we Filipinos have a great grasp of this culture and unique practices,” said Assistant Secretary Macatoman.
Assistant Secretary Macatoman also emphasized the importance of having harmonious halal certification and accreditation policies and standards for the Philippines to improve its integrity and credibility both at the national and the international communities.
The DTI’s Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB)—as the sole agency mandated by the Philippine halal law to handle the accreditation of halal-certification bodies, inspection bodies and testing and calibration laboratories—is currently developing the national halal-certification scheme that will embody the official guidelines for the accreditation of all Philippine halal-certification bodies that wish to be accredited by the PAB.
Organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Region 11, the World Halal Assembly was in line with the DOST’s mandate under Republic Act 10817, known as the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Program Act of 2016, which took effect after its implementing rules and regulations were approved on July 26, 2017.
Islamic scholars, Muslim academicians and scientists, international certification bodies, government officials, entrepreneurs and Muslim and non-Muslim consumers were in attendance during the conference.

The partnership launching at ONE’s upcoming event in Manila, Philippines on 26 January, will harness the power of ONE’s platform to engage millions of martial arts fans around the world to support initiatives and find solutions to the issues associated with extreme poverty. Global Citizen and ONE will collaborate across 24 live ONE events scheduled in 2018, and various outreach activations throughout Asia. Fans will have the opportunity to take action and engage with specific policy areas including, education, food security, hunger and nutrition, global health, gender equality and empowerment.
Chatri Sityodtong, Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, said: “It is with great excitement that I announce ONE Championship’s partnership with Global Citizen, an NGO with the goal of ending extreme poverty across the world by the year 2030. Just like Global Citizen, ONE Championship aims to inspire the people of the world to come together to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. Our ONE Championship athletes embody the spirit of perseverance and many have risen through poverty through martial arts, inspiring millions of people around the world with their journey. Through our collaboration across all 24 of our live events scheduled in 2018, ONE Championship and Global Citizen aim to affect positive movement in our society.”
Wei Soo, Co-Founder of Global Citizen, said: “We are thrilled to be joining forces with ONE Championship to bring Global Citizen to Asia. ONE Championship reaches millions of young people around the region and together we will engage them on issues that impact the entire world. Since we launched Global Citizen in 2012, over 13 million actions have been taken, and we are excited to drive more actions and increase our impact for the world’s most marginalized people through this partnership.”
The first action ONE fans can take will be centred on global education. Fans will be able to call on donor countries such as Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and India, to attend the Global Partnership for Education’s (GPE) replenishment conference in Dakar, Senegal on 2 February 2018, and make a commitment to GPE to support better education for all. Currently, 264 million children around the world are missing out on an education. Over half are girls, and over 75 million have had their schooling disrupted by conflict or natural disasters. At the replenishment conference, the GPE will raise much needed funds that will allow it to continue to support quality, inclusive education to hundreds of millions of children around the world.
Headquartered in New York with offices in Canada, Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom, Global Citizen was founded in 2012 with the goal of building the largest platform where people can learn about issues, take action on what matters most, and join a global movement working to end extreme poverty by 2030. Since then, millions of Global Citizens around the world have taken over ten million actions, which includes millions of emails, tweets, petition signatures, and phone calls targeting world leaders to end extreme poverty by 2030. To date, the actions by Global Citizen’s global community, along with its high-level advocacy efforts and various partners, have resulted in 130 commitments and policy announcements from leaders, including financial aid valued at over US $35-billion, that is set to affect the lives of over 1.3 billion people.
